Kitchen as per Vastu-Fengshui

Kitchen is the most important room in the house as an Indian wife spends most of her time in it preparing food that energises herself and her family as well. Ages ago, the kitchen was situated in the open spaces which resulted in much positivity in the family ambience in terms of physical, mental and emotional security. The biggest reason for this was the free flow of energy and light through the kitchen, thereby making it possible to dispel the smoke as well as the negativity out of it. Today, most of us have closed kitchens; thus it becomes little difficult for the negative energies to move out of it and hence contributes to the various ailments.

It is said that the kind of food we have affects our school of thought as well. For example, if the women preparing the meal for the family isn’t happy or is tensed about something; the same would be reflected in the people having the food prepared by her. This is where Vastu and Fengshui play an important role. Creating an aura of optimism and strength in the kitchen,  it makes sure that the cook has a positive frame of mind while cooking such that it rejuvenates the mind of the people having the food rather than draining it out.

Ideal Directions:
  1. As per the basic fundamentals of Vastu and Fengshui, the kitchen should ideally be located in the south east area of the plot which is occupied by the lord of ‘Agni’ or the one which comprises of the fire element. East is suitable direction for laying your kitchen. The kitchen in the North West is still acceptable for South facing houses; though precautionary measures should be taken here as well since there may be an increase in the expenditures if the kitchen is in the North west.
  2. The kitchen platform should ideally be laid in the South east and south directions in the L shaped forms where the items like the stove or burner and other electronic appliances should be placed a few inches away from the wall.
  3. The person cooking the meals in the kitchen should always be facing the east direction. In case such a direction isn’t possible; the best tip suggested here is to hang a convex mirror on the wall or above the stove/burner such that you can see the direction of the east.
It should also be kept in mind that the person cooking should not have his back directly opposite the entrance door of the kitchen instead he should have a clearer view of what is happening behind his back.
  1. The ideal location for sink is north – east. The water and utensils etc related to water should be placed on the north east as far as possible. The next best direction is north. Also another fact to be kept in mind is that the north of the kitchen should be kept as light as possible.
  2. It is good to have some windows on the east or west walls. The exhaust fan can be fitted somewhere in these places.
  3. If planning for a dining table in the kitchen, it should be kept in the west or the North West directions.
  4. The ideal place for keeping the grains, pulses and other food items is south or west directions. This is because as per fundamentals of Fengshui – Vastu, thesedirections should be occupied with heavy objects. It is advisable to make the southern and western walls on a heavier side, so as a suggestion cupboards and closets can be put here to store grains etc.

Ideal colors:

The walls of the kitchen should ideally be painted in the shades of Yellow, Orange, Peach and Pink. These colours encourage prosperity and well being in the house by increasing the determination and tenacity.

Tips to enhance prosperity and healthy living
  1. Add more colour to your kitchen by making use of colours like yellow, orange, peach, red, pink and green but avoid colours like black, navy blues, gray etc. This can be done by bringing in more utensils, storage items, containers, colour of the walls with such colours.
  2. Keep your stove always clean. The stove generates wealth and money making opportunities. A dirty stove brings obstacles in one’s way and limits his earning capabilities.
  3. Do not keep stale vegetables or spoiled food in the refrigerator. Remove them to open up the space for prosperity to enter and fill your lap with opportunities.
  4.  Make sure you have only wooden table and chairs in the kitchen. Since wood comes from living trees, it is further connected with growth. So wooden furniture in the kitchen helps you increase your income.
  5. Dispose off any non functioning burners on the stove or any of the electrical appliances in the kitchen as they add to your frustration and also limit the ability to make money.
  6. Repair any leakages of taps etc in the kitchen as leakage of any kind makes the money leak away from the house too.
